Jr. Grizzlies
PRO TIPS, SKILLS & INFO
Pro Advantage Hockey would like to welcome all of the Jr. Grizzlies players to this page which contains various skill videos, game concepts and interesting information related to the development and coaching within the Jr. Grizzlies program.
The individual skill videos below were created in an effort to demonstrate how the skills we are working on can be relevant to game situations, even at the highest level. These are fundamental to each player's hockey development. Providing a visual example of skills performed in actual games will hopefully provide yet another method of teaching and developing skill. For some players this may be beneficial as it provides them a visual and game-like example that they can study and view repeatedly if needed.
Game concepts, such as defensive zone play, forechecks, powerplays, penalty kills, etc., are provided to assist players in their continued learning of the game played at high levels.
Informational posts are presented to educate players and/or to provide inspiration for their growth and development.
*Please note that this page is shared exclusively with the Jr. Grizzlies program and cannot be accessed by directly visiting the website of Pro Advantage Hockey. In order to continue to view these and future video clips, please use the link that was emailed to you.
We hope that the players will enjoy and benefit from these posts to further their hockey development.
CROSBY SKATING HIGHLIGHTS
Jr. Grizz Players,
In this video you will see a compilation of highlights showing Crosby both practicing and using some of the skills we plan to work on throughout the year. These are some of the skating basics that will allow you to be better player and a more confident and stronger skater. In the game clips notice when and how he uses the tight turn and mohawk techniques to evade defenders, protect the puck and get himself into good passing and scoring positions. Of course, try to work on these in practice and especially during scrimmages or small area games. It will become more instinctive during games if you continue to work on these techniques during your ice sessions.

TIGHT TURNS
Jr. Grizz players,
Performing effective and efficient tight turns will help you become a more evasive player. It is one of the basic and foundational skating skills needed to be a better hockey player. In these two clips you will see how Tavares and Crosby do a great job to maintain momentum and stability while performing tight turns. This allows them to evade their defenders and to keep a half stride advantage on them. Both result in good scoring opportunities and even a goal. Notice the positioning of their feet and how they explode out of the turn, which leads to more time and space for them to follow up with a great play by making a good pass (Crosby) or by being a good passing option for their teammate (Tavares). Keep these visual images in your mind when practicing this skill and with practice you should become a more evasive and dynamic player.

SHOOTING USING THE MOHAWK SKATING TECHNIQUE
Jr. Grizz Players,
In this clip you will see Martinez using the mohawk skating technique to adjust his body position to a pass and better position himself to take an immediate shot on net. Notice how he receives the pass at the same time as performing the mohawk skating technique and does not over-handle the puck. This allows him to quickly release the puck which leads to the goal.

DEFLECTIONS
Jr. Grizz Players,
This video will focus on deflections. Note how the players effectively use the angle of their sticks. They don't use a lot of downward or upward motion with their stick. They let the blade of their stick do the work to redirect the direction of the puck.
WIDE PUCKHANDLING
Jr. Grizz Players,
In these clips you will see players moving the puck quickly across their body to avoid pokechecks from goalies and defenders. This is a key puckhandling skill to work on to allow you to maintain control of the puck and navigate through traffic. Wide puckhandling such as this can be worked on in almost every practice and can even be performed while standing in line while you wait for your turn in drills.

EVASIVE MANEUVER - HALF STOP (STUTTER STEP)
Jr. Grizz Players,
In this video you will see players performing an evasive maneuver that has been called a few different names. It is a sort of half stop or half turn that allows the puck carrier to evade their defender. This is an advanced move but players can begin to work on a variation of this that looks like a half turn and this can be very effective to gain more space and evade defenders.
EVASIVE MANEUVER - BEHIND THE BACK PASS (JACK EICHEL) (AUSTON MATTHEWS)
This maneuver can be performed especially when you are along the boards and don't have a lot of space or time to perform a tight turn. This move can be very effective if you change directions quickly and not lose control of the puck once it is banked off the boards or "drop passed" to yourself.
EVASIVE MANEUVER - SPIN A RAMA
In these clips you will see an advanced evasive maneuver performed by spinning away from a checker yet still maintaining momentum to get around the same checker. As you will see, this can be used by both defencemen and forwards.
